Large antique carved millstone imported from England.  Wonderful mossy patina

Millstones were an agricultural tool important in feeding the population until the Industrial Revolution.  It took two millstones to grind the grain     - a base or convex "bedstone" and then a concave top or "runner" stone that turned on top to grind the grain.  Millstones have deep grooves ("furrows"),     a flat surface ("land"), and smaller grooves ("feathering").  The millstones must be evenly balanced with accuracy so that the grain is ground     precisely.  Millstones were carved from burrstone, sandstone, and limestone.  Smaller millstones could be used by a family or on a small     farm, while larger ones were used in mills and in business.  Millstones make wonderful garden ornaments - as bases, steps, fountains, or as a     decorative focal point.
