18th Century Stone Urn

Please note that our showroom is currently closed until further notice.

This rare and monumental finial urn (standing at 5ft) is beautifully carved limestone with deep relief of cascading fruit and gadrooning on the finial and fruit swags with decorative carved arches on the bowl. Nicely weathered with excellent patina; circa 1790.

Imported from England.

The urn was purchased from the widow of Percy Quick, a Master Stonemason and a renowned name in the world of historic restoration in England. His projects have included Blenheim Palace as well as many colleges in the University of Oxford. Percy worked on extensive renovations being done at the college during the 1980s. These renovations included extensions that sacrificed some parts of the old college dating back to the 15th Century. The urn is believed to be from these demolished parts of the University and the single sided decoration of the lid of this urn suggests it formed part of the original pediment which was removed.
