Vintage Glass Cloches

Shown here are a set of glass cloches. There are 3 to a set. Imported from England. Measurements are for the largest.

The word cloche means bell in French. A cloche or bell jar is a bell shaped glass cover, normally with a knob on top, used by gardeners to protect         plants early and late in the growing season. Originally made of glass and rather heavy, the Dutch and the English then created hand lights and         hurricane lanterns. They evolved into pyramidal faceted covers and then to a “Chase” cloche which was a building shaped container made of glass         panes and decorative twisted wire. A cloche can be used outside in the garden or inside to create a warm moist container or terrarium cover.
