Impressive Pair of Antique Carved Brownstone Obelisks. Substantial and rare 19th Century antique carved brownstone obelisks with heavy double band detail on three sides, rectangular tapered neck and stepped base. Nice proportions.
This pair of architectural elements stands over 5ft tall and is from a private villa in Europe that was built in the mid 1800s and recently demolished. Beautiful patina and in very good condition given age and use.
The word obelisk is Greek, from obelos meaning pointed object. The Greeks typically erected pairs of obelisks at the entrance to buildings or walkways of importance. These would add a strong statement, grandeur and structure to any garden, drive or building.
