Large Antique Staddle Stone
Early 19th century carved Cornish Granite Staddle Stone. Nicely weathered. Good proportions with round base, thick cap with a flat area on top. Small notch in the base.
These wonderful toadstool like stone structures, found in England and northern Spain, as far back as medieval times. were used as agricultural building supports, they held up granaries, haystacks and beehives to protect them from small animals and allow air circulation underneath.
